Two independent studies have shown that early treatment with induced hypothermia protects from neurological sequels after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (NEJM 2002 346(8): 549-556, 557-563). The importance of therapeutic hypothermia is supported by the advisory statement from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), which was published recently (Resuscitation 57 (2003) 231-235, Circulation, 2003; 108:118-121).
The Northern Hypothermia Network is a clinical and research network, supported by the Scandinavian Critical Care Trials Group (SCCTG). The network is also asking for support from the national societies of Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of countries represented in the network.
The Northern Hypothermia Network is independent, non-commercial and has three main aims:
To promote the introduction of
therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest through a continuous update of
clinical protocols and treatment proposals (available on the web).
To promote the documentation of the
clinical use of therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest through a common
registry – the Northern Hypothermia Registry - which will enable evaluation of
this new treatment paradigm. Unconsciouss cardiac arrest patients, not treated
with induced hypothermia, will also be registered.
To promote common research projects.
The Northern Hypothermia Network has an ambition to arrange meetings and workshops for educational and scientific purposes.
The Northern Hypothermia Network is directed by a Steering Group with representatives from countries participating in the network.
